Ado Poly to Dismiss Students Nabbed for Internet Fraud, Prostitution, Others
Victor Ogunje
The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, has threatened to dismiss any student that would be caught engaging in internet fraud, fondly called “yahoo” and other social vices like cultism, examination misconduct and prostitution.
The institution advised its students to report to the authorities any case of intimidation and sexual harassment by fellow students or lecturers for prompt investigation and disciplinary actions.
The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Dr. Hephzibah Oladebeye, said this in Ado Ekiti while administering matriculation oath on 6,617 Ordinary and Higher National Diplomas’ students for 2020/2021 academic session.
At the occasion, 56 OND and HND students across 28 departments were given a sum of N560,000 cash for their superlative academic performances for the year.
Oladebeye told the matriculating students that the polytechnic has produced quality graduates who are making waves in their chosen careers, and warned that nobody would be allowed to taint the established enviable records of the institution.
He said: “Our quality academic records were there as evidenced in the qualities of graduates we have produced and in the contributions we have made to the development of the country’s education and economy.
“This polytechnic has been maintaining and will continue to maintain zero tolerance for anti social behaviours such as examination misconduct, prostitution, cultism, sexual harassment, hooliganism, gangsterism, corruption, ‘yahoo yahoo’ and any kind of social vices.
“Let me emphasise that any student caught in such acts shall be summarily dismissed”.
The Rector warned that no student should under any guise vandalise the polytechnic’s facilities and warned that any student caught in such unscrupulous act would be dismissed.
“To stem this destructive instinct of a few of you, it is necessary to let you know that academic freedom in higher institutions doesn’t translate to lawlessness; hence, you must know that each student shall be held responsible for any damage in their hostels, laboratories, lecture rooms and workshops”.
Oladebeye charged the students on the need to take their academic pursuits with utmost zeal as grades they acquired in the institution would either impact positively or negatively on their future careers.
He said that the institution has anti-corruption and transparency unit in all the departments to swiftly deal with issues that could dent the image of the polytechnic.
He disclosed that students who exhibit good academic prowess should be rewarded financially to motivate them to pursue their academics with zeal.
“It is disastrous for a negligible few who may wish to jettison the laudable reason for being here and instead embrace evil activities, because the management has put in place vigilant security network to closely monitor students and sniff out the bad eggs.
“We shall not allow unscrupulous elements to dent the hard earned image of the institution. Anybody caught will be made to face the full weight of law.”
