Lagos State University (LASU), is set to commemorate 20 years of chatting a path for communication programmes, designed to further stamp the ever increasing relevance of Communication scholarship in the 21st century.
A week-long activities have been mapped out to commemorate the celebration which will kick-off with a special church service on September 24 and press conference on September 25 at the university 3-1 Auditorium.
The Chairman, Organising Committee, and the immediate past Head of Journalism, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Dr Tunde Akanni, in a statement, said the programme will feature a panel session on same day, that will focus on ‘Media and Governance in the Age of Digital Technology’.
Experts such as the immediate Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Internet Registration Association( NIRA), Ms Edith Udeagu and a player in social media practice and scholarschip; and the Executive Director of Centre for Social Media Research, Dr Akin Olaniyan will be on ground to dissect the topic. The session will be moderated by a multi-genre media activist and social campaigner, Anike Ade Funke Treasure.
Veteran journalists and the Publisher of ThisNigeria Newspaper, Mr. Eric Osagie is expected to deliver a lecture titled ‘Media, Good Governance and Identity Polity Politics’, on September 26.
Other activities include; a march-past by the teaching and non teaching staff of the faculty and a football match by the students. There will also be a Jumat service at the university Central Mosque on September 29.
The programme will climax on September 30, with a special luncheon for select past and current stakeholders which will witness special honours being conferred on all past deans of the faculty, pioneer academic staff and some of the distinguished alumni.
According to Akanni, “from the ambitious beginning dating back to over 20 years ago, Communication Studies at LASU intervened to be a big player from its take-off point at Suruere till date, and now occupying centre-stage on the main campus of the university.”
