Ronke Giwa-Onafuwa Calls for Intentional Parenting During 2nd Book Launch

On Friday, July 21st, 2023, popular broadcaster, Girl Child Advocate and content creator, Ronke Giwa-Onafuwa hosted parents, friends, educators and other professionals to an exclusive launch of her second book, LULU LEARNS at the American corner, IACD Library, Jericho, Ibadan. Lulu Learns is a delightful children’s book that combines captivating storytelling with vibrant illustrations. The charming book, co-authored by Giwa-Onafuwa’s 5 year old daughter, Tobani Onafuwa contains two heartwarming tales: ‘Lulu Learns to Be Grateful’ and ‘Lulu Learns to Speak Up.’

The book launch which was themed “Intentional Parenting” featured a three man discussion panel and included consultant psychologist, Dr. Jibril Abdulmalik, Founder of The Nest Montessori and Bridge International School, Mrs Oyindamola Ige, Founder of ‘Heart of the Father’ Ministry, Yomi Babalola and was moderated by Damilola Fajinmi.

Dr Jibril Abdulmalik stated that parents must prioritize their own well being by dealing with challenges positively and seeking professional help whilst safeguarding their children’s well-being.
He said, “Everyone is susceptible to having mental health problems and it is important that we care for our mental health as much as we do our physical health; with this understanding, we can better protect our children from different vices.”

Another panelist, Mr Yomi Babalola opined that parents too fall under peer pressure, trying to raise their children according to society standards, “Parenting is not one size fits all. All children are different and what works for one child may not work for the other. Parents should strike a balance between discipline and freedom and create an environment where their children can talk to them”

There was also a book reading session by Miss Tobani Onafuwa who read a portion of the book, showing off her eloquent diction to the impressed audience.

The convener, Ronke Giwa-Onafuwa shared the inspiration behind writing a children’s book stating, “In my quest to raise children who are confident, articulate and kind, I decided very early on to be intentional and then I discovered that with kids, storytelling is a powerful tool for teaching life lessons. More powerful than simply telling them not to do certain things.

The chief Launcher, Mrs Oyinda Ige admonished parents to imbibe good reading culture in their children especially from an early age and she added that, “Encouraging children to read books ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination.”

The event also featured young talents like Oreofe Sax, a 12 year old female saxophonist and 8 year old Adigun Olowe Yoruba; one of the youngest chiefs in Africa who can brilliantly recite over a hundred proverbs in Yoruba and English off hand.
Guests also included Mrs Funsho Adegbola of The Vale College, Ibadan, Dr Mrs Adefunke Ekine, Founder of Graceful Oaks Nursery and Primary School, Mrs Elizabeth Otuyalo, Proprietor of The Olives School and other educators and professionals. The Lulu learns book launch was cerebral and inspiring, leaving guests feeling empowered and armed with the right tool for 21st century parenting.
