The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Ogbonanya Onu, has pledged to assist the West Africa Infectious Diseases Institute (WAIDI) with research facilities from its agencies because infectious diseases can impede the economic development of the country if not curtailed.

He said infectious diseases presently constitute about 70 percent of the nation’s health challenges, adding that the ministry will avail relevant institutes with its infrastructure to eradicate any of infectious diseases.

The minister spoke when the Director General of the National Agency for Control of Aids (NACA), who also doubles as the Co-chair of WAIDI, Prof. John Idoko, paid him a visit to solicit the ministry’s support at the weekend in Abuja.

He said the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) under the ministry played an important role in the production of Ebola kit for the eradication of the Ebola virus in 2014.
