Grammy-nominated Afrobeats musician, Davido, is under fire for his comments on Nigeria’s economy. Davido, who through his music and lifestyle, has promoted Nigeria’s image positively for over a decade is for the first time issuing warning against relocating to Nigeria in his comment on The Big Homies House podcast.
He had advised African Americans against relocating to Nigeria, citing poor leadership, a declining exchange rate, and rising oil prices as major concerns.
“It is not cool back home. The economy is in shambles,” Davido said during the interview, which has since gone viral.
While many of his fans hailed him for being vocal about the current economic situation in Nigeria, critics have faulted his comment for demarketing Nigeria.
The remarks sparked backlash, with prominent figures like Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri publicly criticising him. Davido has now alleged that his upcoming Lagos concert in December is under threat of cancellation due to his comments.
In response, he wrote on X, “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”
Davido, who had invited international pop culture figures such as rapper Dababy and popular online streamer Kai Cenat to Nigeria has been a big marketer of the Nigerian brand during interviews. It would be recalled that the Kai Cenat’s visit was cut short due to network issues which affected his entire West African tour.
Davido’s next Lagos show has been scheduled for December 24th.
