Ahead of April 15 governorship rerun election in Adamawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a credible rerun in the state.

The party disclosed this  at a press conference held yesterday in Yola by the Director-General of the Presidential and Governorship Campaign Council of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in the state, Awaal Tukur.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state also carried out a peaceful protest to the INEC office in Yola demanding a credible poll.

Tukur explained that it was a good outing that successfully elected Governor Fintiri with a clear margin of over 31,000 votes ahead of the APC candidate, adding that the votes were credible enough to have declared Fintiri the governor-elect.

He said unfortunately, the INEC failed to do that thereby declaring the elections inclusive with reruns to be held in some wards and 69 units of the state.

According to him, “Despite the fact that the election of the governor was inconclusive and many attempts were made by the APC and some partisan electoral officers to steal our mandate, the people of Adamawa State and members of our great party, PDP, however, remained calm and composed.

“As a political party, in the past weeks, we have had to cope with wrong allegations made by the APC, deliberately perpetuated to gerrymander votes and cause mayhem. That vile attempt and insincerity to steal the people’s mandate was however massively resisted and clearly rejected by the voice of those that truly understood and defended the right principles of democratic fair play.”

Tukur said well-meaning Nigerians, the media, members of the international community and election observers were quick to put on notice the wrong step to announce the APC governorship candidate as the winner “who cooked up and circulated fake results ahead of the formal announcement by INEC.

“With this background in place, as we look up to the rerun elections in two days’ time, I wish to express a kind appeal as the director-general of the state campaign council for PDP.

“I make bold to state that while we call for calm engagement and participation of  the people and citizens of the state, let us again get to prove to the world that APC did not and cannot win this rerun by popular voting.

“This is also to let INEC, our umpire, know that our party will be timely and ready to inspect and scrutinise all available sensitive electoral material(s) for transparency and effective monitoring.

“In the same manner, while our great political party commends the security agents for the services rendered in the

previous elections, it is again timely and most desirable to encourage them to  protect and guide the voters with high sense of professionalism they are known for.”

Meanwhile, the  APC protesters were led by the supreme leader of Natives National Movement of Nigeria, who called on the Adamawa State Electoral Resident Commissioner (REC) not to be intimated in process of carrying out its constitutional obligation.

Speaking at INEC office, Mr. Smart Edward frowned at the use of sentimental campaign against the APC governorship candidate, Aishatu Binani, by opposition party, calling on all the tribes that made up the state to rally round the APC to win the polls.
