The Bauchi State Government has sought for the intervention of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for the reconstruction of the abandoned 82 kilometer Alkaleri – Futuk Road, which contract was awarded at the cost of N32 billion.

Speaking in Futuk yesterday after leading the NEDC’s management team led by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEDC, Dr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, to inspect the road, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed Abdulkadir, lamented that though the federal government awarded the contract but could not mobilise the contract to commence work.

Mohammed said that “you people will recall that Mr. President announced that the road will be constructed when he came to inspect the ongoing oil exploration in the area but since then, we have not heard anything again.

“We then consulted the NEDC knowing that it is part of its mandate and I am glad to inform you that the NEDC team is here to help us reconstruct the road. In fact the sum of N1.5 billion has been approved to mobilise the contractor to site.”

The governor said that the road would open up the area to the outside world considering the abundance of mineral resources in the area, particularly oil and gas that has been discovered in commercial quantity.

Alkali assured that the commission would look into the request of the governor for the reconstruction of the road, which he said is a viable venture.

Alkali said that the area is qualified for the intervention of the commission because of its mineral resources and agricultural produce.

He assured the community that “I am here with some of the management team, we have seen the need and we will go back to present a position to Mr. President for approval so that the project can commence.”
