The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that it would re-conduct its Kumbosto-Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line to enable it wheel more power to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company.
TCN said in a statement by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, that the Kumbosto-Dan Agundi 132kV transmission line currently had the capacity to carry only 90megawatts (MW), adding that this was inadequate for the load demand of the substation.
The Kano Disco had frequently complained of inadequate supplies to it to service consumers in its network.
However, TCN said the planned line re-conduction would change this situation.
TCN also disclosed that it would require the support of the state government to remove a lot of the illegal structures built along the Right of Way (RoW) of its transmission lines, adding that people living under the RoW of the 132kV line are exposed to potential electricity accident.
According to the statement, the snapping of any of the transmission lines could lead to unimaginable disaster on the transmission RoW.
The statement added that in line with its Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Program (TREP), TCN has completed and energised three new transformers in Jos capital of Plateau State and Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State, as well as the repair and reactivation of its Dan Agundi 60MVA 132/33kV power transformer in Kano State, which was burnt in December 2017.
Mbah stated that the new 60MVA 132/33kV transformer installed at TCN’s 330/132/33kV in Jos in Jos transmission substation has improved the transmission of bulk electricity to the Dogan Dutse 33kV distribution line which feeds the heart of Jos and Anglo-Jos 33kV feeder that supplies power to the state secretariat; GRA; and environs.
According to Mba, the Jos sub-station was established in 1975 with 120MVA transformer capacity, now has 180MVA capacity at 132/33kV circuit following the upgrade by 60MVA.
Also, it said the replacement of a 2x30MVA with a new 2x60MVA 132/33kV power transformers in its Abeokuta transmission sub-station has substantially increased transformer capacity from 90MVA to 150MVA and consequently improved power supply to the Ibadan Disco for onward distribution to electricity customers at the University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Owode 1 and 11, Imeko, Lagos Road areas in Ogun.
For the Dan Agundi 60MVA power transformer at its Kano transmission substation, which caught fire in December 2017, TCN said it had been successfully repaired and restored to the system by its in-house engineers.
