Olakiitan Victor in Ado Ekiti
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and labour leaders in Ekiti State, have commended Governor Ayodele Fayose over the first position taken by Ekiti State in the National Examinations Council (NECO) 2016 ranking in the country.
The bodies said the rare feat was a product of the education summit which the governor boldly convoked in 2015 to reform the education sector in the state.
Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Ekiti chapter, Com. Ade Adesanmi and the Secretary of the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), Com. Blessing Oladele, said the feat had returned the state to the old status when it was being regarded as the ‘Fountain of Knowledge’.
Adesanmi said: “It is sad that Ekiti has lost that name over the years but for the bold steps taken by our Governor, we have recaptured the lost glory.
“Now that we have recaptured the lost glory, we must all join hands together to sustain the feat. While we expect the government to continue to give incentives to teachers by paying their salaries and allowances, we also expect the teachers to reciprocated the gesture by being dedicated to duties and respond promptly to all issues that can help the education sector”.
Ayodele in a congratulatory message to the governor , pleaded that
such achievement feat should be replicated in the agriculture sector
, to make the state assumes the food security status.
“We held the Agriculture Summit in 2016 with intention to boost food production in Ekiti. Now that Ekiti is blazing the trail in education, we should also look the way of agriculture because this we help us reduce the price of food items in the market if farmers are given the necessary supports”.
A separate statement signed by NANS Chairman, Ekiti axis, Com. Shina Awopeju, said the feat has again corroborated the governor’s desire to ensure that Ekiti has a set of well groomed youths that can be good ambassadors in any field in the future.
Awopeju appealed to the teachers and students not to relent in their determination to be proud and great future leaders, saying they should long for more academic excellence in public examinations .
“Like Oliver Twist, we will ask our Governor to put more efforts in place to record more greater feat in our tertiary institutions in the state by improving the standard and provision of the needed equipment”.
