The event, held on October 17 at the Lagos Yacht Club, Onikan, Lagos, brought together sailing enthusiasts, corporate stakeholders, and members of the maritime community.
The sponsorship reflects the LSLGA’s broader public-interest responsibilities beyond regulating lottery and gaming activities. These include promoting compliance, protecting consumers and supporting initiatives that contribute to the social and economic development of Lagos State.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the LSLGA, Bashir Abiola Are, highlighted the importance of partnerships between public institutions and established sporting organisations in promoting youth engagement, tourism and recreational opportunities.
He noted that the Lagos Yacht Club’s nearly 90-year history and the continued staging of the Governor’s Cup reflect the importance of preserving sporting traditions that form part of the state’s cultural heritage.
Are also identified Lagos’ coastline, lagoons, creeks and waterways as valuable resources for developing aquatic sports and expanding tourism-related economic activities.
He called for sustained investment in sporting infrastructure, greater private-sector participation and increased opportunities for young people to participate in water-based sports.

According to him, supporting competitions such as the Governor’s Cup can promote recreational activities while creating opportunities for related sectors, including hospitality, tourism and marine services.
LSLGA’s participation in the event aligns with the Lagos government’s development priorities under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, particularly in tourism, entertainment, youth development and economic growth.
Through its regulatory and public-interest responsibilities, the LSLGA continues to support initiatives that promote responsible gaming and deliver social benefits to communities across Lagos.
The 2026 Governor’s Cup Regatta highlights the role of institutional partnerships in advancing sports development and preserving Lagos’ maritime heritage, while underscoring the LSLGA’s commitment to supporting initiatives with wider social benefits.
