Beyond the Spotlight: Miriam Olusanya’s Low-Key Leadership at GTBank
Miriam Olusanya has led Guaranty Trust Bank Nigeria since July 2021, making her the first woman to hold the MD position in the bank’s 35-year history. She has done it without a single viral moment, without a signature public persona, and apparently without any interest in acquiring one.
Olusanya joined GTBank in 1998 as an executive trainee. She spent the next two decades working through the institution’s ranks, becoming an Executive Director in 2018 before ascending to the top role three years later.
Her academic path is equally deliberate: a pharmacy degree from the University of Ibadan, an MBA in Finance and Accounting from the University of Liverpool, and executive programmes at Harvard Business School, INSEAD, Wharton, and Cranfield. Her specialisation runs through asset and liability management, financial markets, wholesale banking, and corporate finance.
She inherited a bank with one of the strongest brand identities in Nigerian financial services. GTBank has long set the pace for customer-facing innovation and corporate aesthetics in the industry. Sustaining that without losing the discipline underneath it demands a different kind of attention than building it from scratch.
Olusanya’s industry footprint extends well beyond GTBank’s internal operations. She chairs SANEF, the CBN-backed Shared Agent Network Expansion Facilities initiative driving financial inclusion across Nigeria. She sits on the board of NIBSS, the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System. She chairs the Financial Market Sub-Committee of the Bankers’ Committee and serves as Vice Chairman of the body of bank CEOs.
Far beyond ceremonial titles, these place her at the centre of decisions that influence how money moves across the Nigerian economy.
None of that activity generates much press. She appears comfortable with that arrangement, letting the institution and its numbers carry the conversation while she occupies the room where the actual decisions are made.
In an industry that rewards long-term credibility over short-term noise, that may be the most sophisticated positioning available.
