Justice Reform Advocacy: LGCF Pushes for Policy Changes in Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System
Nigeria’s criminal justice system has undergone several reforms in recent years, particularly with the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and increasing calls for decongestion of Correctional Facilities.
Civil society organizations have played a significant role in supporting these reforms and advocating policy improvements.
Among these CSOs is Legend Golden Care Foundation (LGCF), a leading nonprofit organization headquartered in Abuja and focused on improving access to justice and strengthening human rights protections across Nigeria.
Founded in 2013 by Kanayo Olisa-Metuh, the organization gradually expanded from humanitarian work to become an active participant in justice reform advocacy. One of the organization’s key activities involves providing pro-bono legal services to individuals who cannot afford legal representation.
Through these efforts, LGCF has handled 1037 legal cases, assisting individuals navigating Nigeria’s complex judicial system.
The organization has also worked within police stations to support suspects during the early stages of detention, through its Police Duty Solicitors Scheme (PDSS).
Through legal advocacy programs, LGCF has assisted more than 200 individuals across police stations, helping ensure due process and fair treatment. Beyond direct legal assistance, the organization has also been active in policy advocacy.
LGCF has participated in stakeholder engagements aimed at strengthening justice reform initiatives and improving implementation of criminal justice laws.
Its advocacy efforts include calls for stronger anti-torture legislation and improved support systems for survivors of abuse.
International collaborations have also played an important role in expanding the organization’s policy advocacy work.
Through partnerships with global human rights organizations such as the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, LGCF has contributed to discussions on torture prevention and rehabilitation frameworks.
As Nigeria continues to pursue justice reform initiatives, civil society organizations like LGCF remain important partners in ensuring that reforms translate into meaningful change for vulnerable populations.
