AniWe Launches Official Anime Merch Store at “AniWe Xchange” Event in Lagos, Strengthening Ties with Japanese IP Holders

the Nigerian anime community gathered at POP Landmark in Lagos for “AniWe Xchange,” a high-energy cultural activation that marked a major milestone for the sector: the official launch of the AniWe Store. The event served as a physical touchpoint for the growing partnership between local organisers and international stakeholders.

The day’s proceedings opened with anime community engagement, including moderated debates on character arcs and a public forum to determine the “top three anime of all time.” These sessions represented the thoughtful discourse that has become a hallmark of the AniWe community, followed by a dedicated “free roam” period designed to facilitate networking among fans, creators, and tech professionals.

The centrepiece of the afternoon was the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the AniWe Store. Dr. Omotanwa Gbadebo, Founder of AniWe, was joined by Satoshi Shinada, a representative of the Japan-Africa Entertainment Business Council (JAEBC), to inaugurate the retail space.

To mark the launch, the store offered discounts of up to 50% on selected items and debuted a collection of premium Japanese merchandise. There was also the live merch auction, which featured rare collectibles, alongside a vibrant showcase of cosplayers representing a wide array of global and local characters.

The launch directly reflects the strategic mission of JAEBC and AniWe to bridge the supply gap between Japanese IP holders and African consumers. During a brief address, Satoshi highlighted how the council — a Tokyo-based non-profit acting as a “co-creation infrastructure” — is working with AniWe to normalise the distribution of licensed goods in West Africa.

This international presence was further bolstered by a representative from Toppan, a prominent Japanese printing and publishing global leader known for producing popular merchandise and manga, who spoke on the importance of authentic content distribution.

The event also featured the introduction of other major partners, including Meta4 and Case Game, who discussed their roles within the creative and gaming ecosystems. Various competitions were also a major draw throughout the day; a Kahoot anime trivia session saw the winner walk away with a ₦20,000 prize, while other participants competed in various Japanese games and high-stakes Beyblade matches for official merchandise.

The success of AniWe Xchange and the launch of the AniWe Store set the stage for the rest of the organisation’s 2026 calendar, including the AniWe August Convention & Awards and the planned industry visit to Japan in October.

Industry observers note that the inclusion of global partners such as JAEBC and Toppan in local activations signals a shift toward a more formalised and economically viable anime market in Nigeria.
