Cyberbullying Case: X User Convicted Over Posts Targeting Adekunle Gold’s Family
An X user, Adeboye Samuel Adeyeye, popularly known online as @Swanky001, has been convicted over offences relating to cyberbullying, cyber-threats and online harassment involving Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold and his family.
The conviction followed proceedings in the suit marked IGP v. Adeboye Samuel Adeyeye (FHC/L/236C/26), heard at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
According to details presented during the trial, the matter stemmed from social media posts shared in July 2025 in which false and unverified claims were allegedly circulated concerning the daughter of celebrity couple Adekunle Gold and Simi.
Prosecutors told the court that despite reactions from users urging that the posts be taken down, the content allegedly remained online for several months. Investigators further claimed that the posts continued to attract engagement and online traction during that period.
The defendant was later arrested in March 2026 following investigations by security agencies.
During sentencing, defence counsel appealed for leniency, citing the defendant’s health condition, status as a first-time offender and cooperation during proceedings. The court also considered apology letters submitted on his behalf.
In its ruling, the court imposed prison terms on the separate counts relating to cyberbullying, cyber-threats and cyber-harassment, while ordering that the sentences run concurrently.
An option of fine was also granted, alongside a restraining order against further actions considered harmful to the complainants.
Legal observers say the judgment reflects increasing efforts to address cyberbullying and online harassment through legal channels, particularly in cases involving public figures and social media activity.
Reacting to the judgment, counsel to Adekunle Gold, Oyinkansola Fawehinmi, disclosed that investigations linked to other accounts allegedly associated with the online campaign were ongoing.
She added that the outcome sends a strong message on responsible social media use, while commending the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary for their handling of the case.
