Adeolu Akande: Scholar-Statesman in a New Terrain 

Adeolu Akande is not a career politician in the conventional sense. He is a Professor of Political Science, a veteran journalist, and a legal practitioner whose public service résumé spans academia, governance, and telecommunications regulation. Having served as Executive Chairman of the NCC Board of Commissioners, presidential aide, and Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, he now seeks to represent Oyo North in the Senate.

His supporters argue that the district requires precisely this blend of intellectual depth and administrative experience.

Akande’s political proposition rests on a simple idea: governance functions best when theory and practice intersect. He has spent decades studying political systems while also operating within them. During his tenure at the Nigerian Communications Commission, he contributed to telecommunications policies that expanded digital access across Nigeria. He now hopes to bring similar expertise to Oyo North through rural connectivity expansion and large-scale ICT infrastructure development.

His legislative priorities extend beyond technology. Akande advocates for an economic framework capable of leveraging Oyo North’s proximity to commercial centres such as Lagos, with particular emphasis on agricultural processing, industrialisation, and regional enterprise growth.

He also prioritises youth and women’s inclusion through vocational development programs, technology-driven entrepreneurship initiatives, federal employment opportunities, and educational support schemes. Through his foundation, scholarships and financial micro-grants have reportedly reached tertiary students and small-scale traders alike.

Political momentum around his candidacy continues to grow. Twenty-four former Oyo North Local Government Chairmen have collectively endorsed his ambition, praising what they describe as his data-driven and ideologically grounded approach to governance. Student associations and progressive youth movements have similarly rallied behind him, advocating meritocracy and structured leadership over transactional politics.

In an era where Nigerian politics frequently rewards noise over substance, Akande represents a different archetype — measured, scholarly, disciplined, and policy-oriented. His supporters believe such qualities are essential at the national level, where meaningful legislation demands more than rhetoric.
