Veils Of Becoming, A Joint Exhibition by Sunday O. Dabo & Rasaq B. Adewunmi

The Seaside Gallery at Volcano Theatre, Swansea, is proud to present Veils of Becoming, a powerful joint exhibition by artists Sunday O. Dabo and Rasaq B. Adewunmi, running from 12 to 26 May 2026. The exhibition opens to the public on the evening of 12 May with a private view from 6PM to 9PM.

Veils of Becoming is a bold and intimate meditation on African womanhood, identity, and self-determination. Through richly layered portraiture and visual storytelling, the exhibition positions women not as passive subjects, but as dynamic carriers of history, emotion, and cultural memory. The works ask urgent questions about what it means to exist between worlds — and to choose, consciously and defiantly, who you are becoming.

About the Exhibition
The works in this exhibition capture a moment of awakening. The figures depicted are not frozen in tradition or defined by expectation they are bold, experimental, and fully themselves. Drawing on the lived realities of the African diaspora, Dabo and Adewunmi explore what it means to inhabit multiple identities simultaneously: to carry a homeland in your body while forging new ground in unfamiliar terrain.

A central theme throughout the collection is the politics of beauty and self-presentation. In these works, the deliberate choices made by Black women in how they adorn, style, and present themselves become acts of resistance quiet confrontations with systems that have long sought to define or diminish them. Beauty here is not decorative; it is declarative.

Veils of Becoming does not offer a single narrative. It holds many voices, many textures, many silences. It is a collection of stories that together assert something irreducible: that African creativity and identity need no permission, no validation from outside. The power is already present it has always been.

About the Artists
Sunday O. Dabo
Sunday O. Dabo is a digital artist, pharmacist, and public health practitioner, born and raised in Nigeria and currently residing in Swansea, United Kingdom. His art is where the different dimensions of his life converge — science, culture, storytelling, and a deep love for people and community. Through bold, expressive digital pieces, Dabo explores themes of identity, resilience, and the everyday beauty of African life. Carrying childhood memories of tradition and simplicity into his practice, he blends them with his experiences in healthcare and education to create work that is both personal and universal. For Dabo, art is both a reflection and a form of healing a way of telling stories, especially those that often go unheard. With every piece, he celebrates African heritage, highlights untold narratives, and opens conversations around healing, pride, and self-awareness. Because these stories deserve to be seen, felt, and remembered.

Through his brand ‘tundeadewunmi’, Adewunmi creates art that inspires feeling and connection, with every piece blending colour, mood, and composition to tell stories beyond words. For him, digital art is more than design; it is a form of expression that transforms ideas into timeless visual experiences.
