DMS — The Brand Beyond the Screen: Building Africa’s Gaming Future
…..How Basiru Faruk is transforming from a content creator into a continent-shaping force across gaming, business, and culture
In the public imagination, DMS is a gaming content creator. He is the young Nigerian who turned childhood game-saves into a continental phenomenon, who earned the YouTube Silver Creator Award and represented Africa at international esports events. But to reduce Basiru Faruk to a gamer is to miss the fuller, more compelling picture of who he is — and where he is going.
Faruk is a multi-dimensional figure. Alongside his gaming career, he is a professional forex trader, a fitness enthusiast, a model, and an artist. He is also a Computer Engineering student — a detail that speaks to an analytical, technical mind that sees the world not just in terms of creative opportunity, but structural possibility. He is, in the truest sense, the archetype of Africa’s new creative professional: someone who moves across disciplines with the confidence of a generation that refuses to be defined by a single box. He was born on the 4th of April 2005, in Ibadan, Oyo State where he had both his primary and secondary education.
Most significantly for the African gaming industry, DMS is currently developing a gaming product that he says aims to transform the esports ecosystem on the continent. The details of the product remain in development, but its ambition reflects the mindset of a creator who has never been content with just playing the game — he wants to change how the game is played.
“Africa has the talent, the passion, and the audience. What we need now is the infrastructure, the products, and the belief that we can build something that the world will use. That is what I am working towards.” — Basiru Faruk, DMS
The name DMS itself tells a story of reinvention. It began as Diamond, a nickname that caught Faruk’s attention when his elder brother — an artist — drew a diamond during a WrestleMania game they were playing together. He loved the symbol, but felt the name alone lacked uniqueness. It became Diamond Slay — a nod to dominance in gameplay — and ultimately abbreviated to DMS, where DM represents Diamond and S represents Slay. By the time he was 17, the name was his established identity, recognised across his community before he had even fully committed to content creation as a profession.
Faruk’s personal story adds depth to this public identity. He lost his father in 2017 — an experience that shaped the resilience and quiet determination that those who know him describe as his most defining characteristic. Coming from a family of three siblings, he has spoken about the role of family as a grounding force through the highs and challenges of building a public career.
As of April 2026, the numbers speak for themselves: 142,000 YouTube subscribers, 12 million YouTube views, 2.3 million TikTok followers, 45 million TikTok likes, 50 million TikTok views, and 108,000 Facebook followers with over 10 million views. Across platforms, DMS commands the largest organic gaming audience on the African continent.
But more than the numbers, what DMS represents is a possibility: that Africa can produce not just great gaming content, but great gaming builders — creators who understand the culture, the business, and the technology deeply enough to reshape an industry. That is the brand beyond the screen. And it is only just beginning.
