NANS Calls for Students’ Involvement in FG’s Educational Reforms

A leading aspirant for the office of the Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Alfred Nwuruku, has advocated that the Nigerian students’ community be adequately carried along in all federal government educational reforms.

Nwuruku, the National Director of Inter-Campus Affairs, stated this while declaring his intention to contest for the office in Abakaliki, Ebonyi.

Nwuruku, a former coordinator of NANS Zone B South-South and South-East, maintained that the Nigerian student community should not remain a passive observer in the planning and implementation of the government’s education policies, and promised that the NANS senate presidency under his watch would rewrite the narrative.

“As our country continues to undertake reforms aimed at strengthening institutions and expanding opportunities in education, the Nigerian student constituency must not remain a passive observer. Rather, we must remain an active and constructive partner in shaping the policies, structures, and ideas that will determine the future of education in our nation.

“In this evolving national context, the senate of NANS must rise to its constitutional responsibility as the intellectual parliament of the Nigerian student community, a chamber where ideas are debated with courage, where student interests are defended with clarity, and where the democratic ideals of our movement are preserved with discipline and integrity.

“The senate must not merely exist as a ceremonial arm of our association. It must function as a living legislative institution, a guardian of student democracy, and a strategic platform through which the collective aspirations of Nigerian students are articulated and advanced,” Nwuruku stated.

He described his aspiration as a natural progression of a journey shaped by years of passionate service, grassroots engagement, and institutional responsibility within NANS.

Nwuruku further pledged that if entrusted with the responsibility of leading the NANS Senate, his core priorities would be to reposition NANS senate as a functional legislative institution, consolidate the voice of Nigerian students in national discourse, strengthen institutional accountability within NANS, advance policy advocacy for student welfare and promote unity across the Nigerian student association.

He added that “division weakens the strength of our collective voice and the NANS Senate must serve as a stabilising institution that promotes dialogue, inclusion, and unity across campuses, regions, and ideological divides”.
