Naval Chief: We Cannot Compensate Sacrifices of Fallen Heroes
Linus Aleke in Abuja
The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice-Admiral Idi Abbas, has stated that neither the Nigerian State nor the Armed Forces can truly compensate for the ultimate sacrifices made by personnel who die in defence of the nation.
He made this remark on Tuesday during the handover of a two-bedroom house to Mrs. Saadatu Aminu, widow and next of kin of a fallen naval rating at Navy Town, Karshi, Abuja.
The CNS, who was represented by the Director of Veteran Affairs at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Raheem Taofeek, emphasized the need for continued public support and prayers for security personnel.
According to him, such interventions, regardless of their scale, remain symbolic gestures meant to honour and immortalize the sacrifices of fallen heroes.
He noted that the late LME Aminu, like many others, paid the ultimate price in service to the nation, and prayed for the repose of his soul.
Reflecting on the commitment of serving personnel, the naval chief stressed that their selflessness enables citizens to live safely, urging Nigerians to continually support and pray for them as they confront danger daily.
He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Navy remains committed to prioritizing the welfare of its personnel by providing the necessary support to enhance their effectiveness in addressing security challenges.
Vice-Admiral Abbas also commended the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Naval Building and Construction Company Limited for the timely completion of the building.
He disclosed that the late rating died on January 20, 2025, while on deployment to Operation Fansan Yamma in Zamfara State, adding that the housing provision was approved as part of efforts to support his family.
He noted that the gesture is one of several welfare packages designed to ease the burden on families of deceased personnel.
In his remarks, the representative of the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Navy Holdings Limited, Rear Admiral Peter Zakaria, described the initiative as a reflection of the Navy’s compassion and responsibility.
He said the gesture underscores the commitment to ensuring that fallen heroes are never forgotten and symbolizes continued support for the welfare and dignity of their families.
