Standing out of the legion of fashion savvy individuals and professionals in Nigeria and indeed Africa can be a hard nut to crack but not for Quwiyat Olashile Lawal, the founder of Sisi Sewing, a forward-looking brand built on contemporary African taste and aesthetics for women.
Since 2022 when Sisi Sewing was established as a fashion brand, it has been a conscious visual journey through indigenous fabric exploration, drawing inspiration from African culture, colour, and heritage while remaining modern and globally relevant.
Behind the craftsmanship in Sisi Sewing’s ready-to-wear pieces is a palpable intention to create durable pieces rather than just fast fashion. By appropriating indigenous African fabrics in garment design and construction, Lawal creates a sustainable body of works with cross-generational appeal.
On the heels of consistent practice, Lawal focused on creating ready-to-wear and custom-designed garments that combine creativity, culture, and personal expression. The brand explores fashion as a form of storytelling, using design to communicate identity, confidence, and individuality. Tapping from urban interpretation of styles, Lawal’s pieces communicate confidence whether through a minimalist or detailed approach.
Hewn designs from timeless patterns make all the difference for Lawal. For instance, her use of draping- a practice first known with Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians, before its Graeco-Roman revolution, is a way of alluding to history while keeping pace with today’s trendy visual elements of female garment construction.
To bridge the gap between authenticity and cultural appropriation, Lawal often works with domestically sourced fabrics that allow both structure and movement, including Adire, Ankara, Aso Oke, textured textiles, sheer layers, structured materials, and expressive prints. The bottom line is to create a fashion ensemble that expresses identity, confidence, and personal stories.
By exploring form, structure, and material through layering and intentional construction, the designer engages with global fashion conversations, focusing on clarity of silhouette and emotional expression. Knitting custom couture with mass production, Lawal’s Sisi Sewing predominantly parades structured dresses with defined shapes, layered garments with draped elements, statement gowns, and tailored looks that balance fitted and fluid silhouettes. There are also pieces with sculptural details, oversized forms, and long flowing designs that explore proportion and movement.
Finding pieces that fit into current conversations around individuality and statement dressing in the ready-to-wear ecosystem requires diligence and a modest interpretation of high fashion. Instead of focusing on seasonal cycles as often practised in Western fashion, Sisi Sewing prioritises storytelling. Hence, a viewer can tell what ceremony or mood a dress can fit in as against being fixated on climate control. Still, the range and texture of the fabrics can help the wearer determine what works for the prevailing weather conditions where she lives or travels to.
To minimise wardrobe malfunction, attention is paid to clean construction and careful finishing, using structured seams to support the silhouette and neat internal finishing to ensure durability and quality. For Lawal, learning from history is paramount. Many A-list celebrities place personal comfort below fitting but at Sisi Sewing, the pieces are built with high value in functionality and style.
The collection called continuum supports the growth of Sisi Sewing by presenting distinctive designs that appeal to clients who value originality and cultural perspective.
The Continuum collection is a bold, fluid exploration of modern elegance with designs flowing seamlessly from structured silhouettes to fluid, draped pieces, echoing themes of movement and connection. Lawal’s innovative use of fabrics involves blending traditional textiles like adire and aso-oke with modern twists. This is a sustainable practice that aims to present retro-style through a forward-looking lens.
Most of the pieces look far too conceptual; accessibility might be an issue for everyday wear. Although the avant-garde elements are undeniable, the wearability belongs largely to women of class and elegance who place high value on luxury.
Overall, “continuum” pushes boundaries and sparks conversation – a standout collection embedded in fabric odyssey.
By bringing an African-informed approach into contemporary spaces and encouraging diverse creative voices, it contributed greatly to the black fashion landscape with the hands-on experience of the founder who began her fashion journey at Hajjewels Fashion Academy, where she trained from 2018 to 2021, developing skills in garment construction and design before founding Sisi Sewing in 2022.
Her work has received recognition through media features, exhibitions, and fashion showcases. She gained mainstream visibility through participation in Africa Fashion Week Nigeria in 2025, where the brand was covered by BellaNaija. Lawal also exhibited at the Deshapeble Trade Fair in Birmingham in 2025, contributing to the growing visibility of Sisi Sewing within the fashion industry.
