2027: Group Urges Iyamu to Contest Edo South Senate Seat

The Edo Youth Vanguard has called on the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Paddy Iyamu, to contest the Edo South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, citing his administrative competence and extensive philanthropic record as compelling reasons for his candidacy.

In a statement issued in Benin City and signed by its President, Osaro Osewingie, and General Secretary, Isoken Kate Ikponmwen, the group described Iyamu as a “tested leader and compassionate public servant” whose track record in governance and community service distinguishes him as a suitable representative for Edo South at the National Assembly.

The group said Iyamu’s performance as Commissioner for Education under Governor Monday Okpebholo has demonstrated his capacity to deliver results in public office.

He was appointed in January 2025 to replace Joan Oviawe and had previously served as Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

According to the youth body, he was able to effectively deliver on the role given to him by his political father Senator Monday who was awarded Best Governor in Education in Nigeria.

They noted that Iyamu’s leadership in the education sector has been marked by reforms and strategic interventions aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening institutional frameworks across the state.

Beyond his public office, the group highlighted Iyamu’s philanthropic initiatives, which have impacted thousands of residents across Edo South and beyond.

Through his foundation, he has undertaken programmes such as prison outreach schemes, annual Christmas support for widows, free medical surgeries for indigent citizens, and youth empowerment initiatives.

They noted that his interventions including grants for young entrepreneurs, housing support for vulnerable families, and financial assistance to local non-governmental organisations demonstrate a deep commitment to grassroots development.

“He was able to attract 800 slots from Google international to give Edo youths opportunities in the international market .Through his foundation,he has empowered hundreds of youths even before politics and helped families battling sicknesses by conducting free surgeries yearly

The group argued that Edo South requires a senator with both administrative experience and a humanitarian disposition, adding that Iyamu’s blend of governance expertise and community engagement positions him to effectively represent the district at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

They further maintained that his wide acceptance among youths and community stakeholders makes him a formidable prospect for the 2027 senatorial race.

Sources close to the commissioner however said despite suoffocating pressure it is not clear if Iyamu will join the race for the national assembly election.

” Iyamu has warmed himself into the hearts and minds of Edo people. For now he is more concerned working towards achieving the SHINE agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo”.
