GBV: FCT Community Records Zero Tolerance in Two Years

As 16 Days of activism against Gender-based Violence, GBV, ends in the Federal Capital Territory, Karonmajigi Community in Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, of the Federal Capital Territory, has recorded zero tolerance for Gender-Based Violence, GBV, within the past two years.

The Hakimi of Karonmajigi, Yunusa Abdullahi Bako, made this known in his palace, during a sensitization rally to mark the end of 16 Days Activism against Gender-Based Violence in the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the royal father, he has put in place, a workable mechanism to sensitize and enforce zero tolerance for Gender-Based Violence within the community.

“I would like to appreciate the Mandate Secretary of FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Benjamins-Laniyi, for bringing this initiative to all women and children in this community.

“Here in Karonmajigi, we don’t have any issue of Gender-Based Violence in the past two years, because we have some regulations that prohibit any form of Gender-Based Violence, and we have also set up a team to help enforce the regulations. Am trying my best to ensure the that GBV would not continue in this community”, Bako said.

Commending the Hakimi for the record-breaking achievement, Mandate Secretary of FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, who coordinated the 16 days activism with support from UN Women, called for more efforts to sustain the zero GBV tolerance status in the community.

Her words, “Today, the Hakimi and his cabinet have spoken to us, about how an advocacy we started two years ago, has produced an amazing zero tolerance for GBV in Karonmajigi community.

“I urge that this status be sustained and other communities emulate this. On behalf of the global community of advocacy and collective action against GBV, I say thank you Hakimi, for this great achievement”, Adedayo said.

Meanwhile, the Gomo of Kuje, Haruna Tanko Jibrin has pledged to achieve the zero tolerance for all harmful traditional practices and lifestyles that violate the rights of women and girls in Kuje Area Council of the FCT.

The monarch made the pledge in his palace, while addressing a crowd of women on advocacy rally against harmful practices such as early marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, breast ironing, among others.

He expressed profound gratitude to FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, for collaborating with the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, to reach out to the grassroot for advocacy against traditional practices and lifestyles that violate the rights of women and girls in the territory.

The advocacy rallies and sensitization at Karonmajigi and Kuje represent government’s commitment to drive inclusivity as a policy to ensure that women, girls and others in the vulnerable space of society are not left behind, but empowered to contribute their quota for national development.
