Golden Morn 3in1: Nestlé Nigeria’s Role in Providing Nutritious Meal for All
By Rebecca Ejifoma
In Nigeria, nutritious food is everywhere, but not everyone can afford a healthy meal. This is a sad reality that gives malnutrition a pathway to thrive. While this situation keeps Nigeria far from achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 2, which calls for an end to hunger and access to nutritious and affordable food, there comes a silver lining—Nestle Nigeria. Its newly launched Golden Morn 3in1 offers Nigerians an accessible, fortified, and affordable option that is shaping families’ nutrition journey. Rebecca Ejifoma weighs the nutritional value, cost effectiveness on family finance and accessibility of the product.
Even before the first rooster crows, many Nigerian households are already alive with activity. It begins with the aroma of breakfast as parents prepare for work, children get dressed for school, and traders rush to catch early public buses heading to the markets—from BRT, danfo, molue, motorcycle to Korope among others. Across cities and rural towns, the hustling and bustling of life begins.
But amid this daily hustle, one constant challenge persists, finding nutritious, affordable meals that can sustain energy, boost productivity, and support good health. For millions of Nigerians, this has become a major challenge.
“With no fewer than 172 million Nigerians unable to afford a healthy diet, we recognise the urgent need for practical nutrition solutions,” explains Omofasa Orhiunu, Category Manager for Healthy Cereals at Nestlé Nigeria. “Retailing at just N300, Golden Morn 3in1 is fortified with GRAINSMART Protect—a blend of iron and essential vitamins that helps support immunity while providing protein, calcium, and fibre for overall wellbeing.”
According to the 2024 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, released by the United Nations, the number of Nigerians unable to afford a healthy diet in 2022 stood at about 172 million. This staggering reality set the global call under the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2): to end hunger, achieve food security, and improve nutrition by 2030.
That is why Nestlé Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading food and beverage companies, is positioning Golden Morn 3in1 as part of its broader vision to make safe, nutritious, and affordable food accessible to everyone. Through its fortified meals and commitment to local nutrition education, the company is forging ahead in its drive to enable families to build healthier eating habits without straining their pockets.
Nutritional benefits of maize, soya cereals, mile
Interestingly, nutritionists in Nigeria and West Africa the nationwide availability and affordable packaging of Golden Morn 3in1 reflect Nestle Nigeria’s mission to make nutrient-packed meals accessible to all Nigerians – children and adults. This innovative product blends maize, soya cereal, and milk to deliver a balanced combination of protein, calcium, vitamins, and iron—all essential for children’s growth and adult health, as recognised by UNICEF. Maize contributes fiber, B vitamins, vitamin C, and key minerals like zinc, magnesium, and phosphorus, supporting digestion, immunity, energy, and bone development. Its antioxidants promote eye and brain health, while its fiber fosters gut health and regularity. Together, these nutrients help boost the immune system, enhance cognitive function, and sustain overall well-being.
Professor of Nutrition and Public Health with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Ghana, Prof. Matilda Steiner Asiedu speaks on the key nutritional benefits of maize, soya, and milk as combined in Nestlé Golden Morn 3in1. “Maize provides mainly carbohydrates, which are the primary energy source in the cereal. This helps fuel physical and mental activities throughout the day. This makes it especially important for growing children and busy adults.”
With research showing that soya is rich in quality protein but also contributes good amounts of carbohydrates and healthy fats, Steiner Asiedu clarified that the type of fatty acid present—linoleic acid—is essential for human health. “Linoleic acid supports growth in infants, children, and pregnant women. It also contributes to healthy skin, improves cardiovascular health, helps reduce inflammation and blood pressure, and supports immune functions. The content in Golden Morn 3in1 is balanced to be protective, not excessive,” she emphasised.
The nutritionist described milk as one of the most nutritious foods and is good for children. “It is rich in protein and calcium, which children need for bone and teeth health. It is also rich in some essential vitamins, B12 and D.”
How Golden Morn 3in1 bridge micronutritional gap, energise children’s brain
For families who may otherwise struggle to afford balanced meals, particularly regarding iron, vitamins, protein, and calcium, Steiner Asiedu confirmed that Golden Morn has all essential macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. “Micronutrients essential for growth are also added through fortification, and enrich the cereal to meet nutritional needs. Those present are iron, calcium (minerals), vitamins A, C, B1, and B5. Based upon the composition above, it is a good food choice to help families meet their nutritional needs daily.”
According to the nutritionist, Golden Morn 3in1 is good for all ages, as she encourages all families to incorporate it into their meal plan. With the presence of iron and Vitamin A, “These are micronutrients that are of global challenge but skewed towards lower to middle-income countries. Protein and calcium are also excellent in the composition. I will encourage families to have it at least for breakfast (the most important meal of the day) to bridge the micronutrient gap. For children, it will also energise the brain to learn effectively in school.”
