Platform Champions a New Era for African Storytellers
For decades, African writers have struggled to get their voices heard beyond local borders. But a growing movement led by Nigerian-founded Harmony Publishing is changing the script — turning aspiring authors into published voices on a global stage.
Founded in 2016 by Chukwuma Okeke, Harmony Publishing is not just a publishing company — it’s a literary bridge. A bridge between African writers and international readers. A bridge between raw manuscripts and professional books available on global shelves.
“In the beginning, I met so many writers with brilliant stories who simply didn’t know where to start,” Okeke recalled. “They weren’t being rejected because their writing was bad — they just didn’t have access to the right support.”
That observation led to the birth of Harmony Publishing — a company built around making self-publishing practical, affordable, and empowering for African writers. Today, it serves hundreds of authors, offering services like editing, book design, audiobook production, ISBN registration, and even marketing support.
“We’re building more than books,” Okeke said. “We’re building a culture of African storytelling that doesn’t have to wait for validation. Our writers own their narratives.”
In 2023, Harmony Publishing opened its first U.S. office, marking a bold step toward becoming a truly global player. With this expansion, African authors working with the firm now enjoy wider distribution, faster delivery times, and better positioning in the international literary space.
One of the company’s most innovative moves is the creation of a quarterly magazine, dedicated to demystifying the publishing process for beginners. Packed with practical tips, author stories, and marketing advice, the magazine serves as a community builder and educational tool.
“We realised that many of our clients weren’t just writing one book — they wanted to build a career,” Okeke explained. “The magazine gives them tools to grow beyond publishing — into personal brands and full-time authors.”
Harmony also offers a dedicated online platform for promoting books, giving writers control over how their stories are discovered and sold.
For many authors, especially first-timers, the support has been life-changing.
“Some of our writers have gone from being complete unknowns to selling their books internationally,” Okeke shared. “And they did it without compromising their voice or vision.”
As Okeke puts it: “The world is finally listening — and we’re making sure more African writers are ready to speak.”
The company has since published over 500 books, launched a literary magazine, and introduced an online marketing platform to boost authors’ visibility. Notable successes include Tom Lash Kilo’s thriller Hell Road: The Courier, Mitchelle Obatu’s Sex Love Purity, and The Testator, co-authored by Nollywood star Kanayo O. Kanayo. “These books prove that African stories can captivate global audiences,” Okeke noted
