Advanced Kidney Disease: 16-Year-Old Girl Seeks N22m for Life-Saving Transplant
Mrs. Rhoda Nwachukwu, a single mother in Lagos, is urgently appealing for financial help to save her 16-year-old daughter, Colette, who has been diagnosed with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) at Gbagada General Hospital.
Colette, the mother said, was initially admitted for a fever but was later found to have severe kidney failure requiring immediate treatment.
Since her diagnosis, she has undergone 19 dialysis sessions, each costing N150,000, totaling millions of naira.
Despite these efforts, her condition demands a kidney transplant estimated at N22 million—an amount far beyond Mrs. Nwachukwu’s means. She revealed that even saving her entire salary for 20 years would not cover the cost.
Living hand to mouth since the diagnosis, Mrs. Nwachukwu described her daughter as an intelligent young girl with dreams of becoming a medical doctor. She fears that without urgent intervention, Colette’s potential and life may be lost.
According to research, childhood CKD in Nigeria often goes undiagnosed until late stages due to lack of awareness, limited healthcare resources, and inadequate insurance coverage, leading to high mortality rates among affected children.
Many families are said to face similar struggles, as kidney replacement therapies remain largely inaccessible and unaffordable.
Mrs. Nwachukwu is now appealing to the public and well-wishers to support her daughter’s treatment, hoping that collective compassion can give Colette a fighting chance.
Those moved by Colette’s story are encouraged to donate to her medical fund to help cover the cost of her transplant and ongoing care.
