LEG Lagos Challenge Debuts with Youth Soccer Tourney
Determined to contribute its own quota in talent discovery in football in the country, the maiden LEG Lagos Challenge is to hold between April 2nd and 8th at the main bowl of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Addressing the media during the week, the Director General of the project, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, said that the event which is in conjunction with Donbalon Sports Commerz is to create a niche for pure passion, natural flair and fair competition among football academies in the country.
“We aimed at organising a professional competition using the best of facilities, soccer personnel and technology. This explains the choice of Teslim Balogun Stadium which Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has graciously promise to support the project with,” he noted.
He explained that the annual championship has a target of players between 18 to 23 years, excluding players in either the amateur or professional rank of Nigerian football.
“The inaugural edition will compose of 16 teams drawn into four groups. The teams will engage themselves in round robin competition with the first two in each group going into the quarter finals and later all the way into the final match of the competition,” he explained.
Aside the football tournament, LLC has also put in place a developmental seminar which will come up during the draw ceremony of the competition on the 31st of this month.
He explained further that certain categories of prizes in honour of some prominent footballers would be given out to deserved players at the end of the competition.
“The Most Valuable Player award will be in honour of Austin Jay Jay Okocha, just as the Highest Goal Scorer award is for Late Rashidi Yekini,” he stated.
Other awards are the Best Goalkeeper in honour of Peter Rufai, Best Behaved team in honour of Mutiu Adepoju, Best Referee in honour of Linus Mba just as Samson Siaisa award will go to the best coach of the competition. While the LEG Star Team award will go to the sponsor.
