The House of Representatives has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to resolve the communal crisis between Nneyi-Umueri and Sugbe communities of Anambra East local government area.
The resolution of House followed the adoption of a motion moved at plenary yesterday by Hon. Peter Aniekwe.
Moving the motion, the lawmaker said the primary reason for governance was to protect lives and properties as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as Amended.
He stressed that the communal crisis caused by boundary dispute between Umueri and Nsugbe communities located in Anambra East started in the early hours of 22nd November, 2023, has resulted in loss of several lives and properties with many people displaced.
The lawmaker, who regretted that the crisis has left some houses burnt down, expressed worry that an escalation was imminent if an urgent step was not taken to nip the crisis in the bud.
The house, therefore tasked “The Committee on Police Affairs to manage the ongoing crisis and nip it in the bud to avoid further loss of lives and destruction of properties.”
It further mandated the Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials to victims of the current crisis.
Meanwhile, the House has called on NEMA to quickly respond to petroleum fire disaster incidence at Abajah in Nwangele L.G.A of Nkwerre/Isu/Nwangele/Njaba federal constituency of Imo state.
The decision of the House followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved at the plenary on Thursday by Hon. Ugenna Ozurigbo.
Presenting the motion, the lawmaker said it was the core mandate of NEMA to quickly respond to disasters of high magnitude in Nigeria, including disasters that affect lives and livelihoods.
