Sylvester Idowu in Warri

Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) yesterday urged the Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to as a matter of urgency, embark on the construction of Ayakoromor Bridge, others for the benefits of the Ijaw people.

Aside the bridge project, the Ijaw Youths asked the state governor to focus on Ogulagha-Odimodi road, School of Marine Burutu Permanent Site, and other essential projects in Ijaw Areas.

The council made the demand in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Doubra Okotete; Secretary, Mr. Olu Derimo and Information Officer, Mr. Lugard Izoukumor

He commended Oborevwori on the recent approval of contracts for the construction of three bridges worth N78 billion in Warri and Effurun to Julius Berger, IYC Western Zone, saying such gesture should be extended to, long promised projects, in Ijaw areas.

“IYC, a prominent youth organization representing the interests of Ijaw youths in Delta, Edo and Ondo States, has urgently called upon Oborevwori to as a matter of urgency prioritize the long-awaited commencement of critical projects, such as the Ayakoromor Bridge, Ogulagha-Odimodi Road, Permanent site of the School of Marine Technology, Burutu and various other infrastructural developments in Ijaw areas.

“The IYC firmly believes that the timely execution of these projects is of paramount importance for the overall development and progress of the Ijaw areas considering the infrastructural deficit in the twenty four Ijaw kingdoms in the state.

“The infrastructure projects hold immense potential for transforming the educational, socio-economic landscape of our communities and uplifting the lives of our people.”

The council highlighted the significance of the Ayakoromor Bridge, the Ogulagha-Odimodi Road, construction of the School of Marine Technology, Burutu permanent site and other long-overdue projects.

It pleaded with Oborevwori to swiftly initiate the necessary steps for the implementation of the projects, recalling that the projects had been repeatedly mentioned and promised during campaigns.

It said: “It is now imperative to translate words into action. While commending Oborevwori for approving three new flyovers and other projects, we are not happy not seeing the Ayakoromor bridge, Ogulagha- Odimodi road and other key projects in the Ijaw areas not reflecting as part of the approvals made.

“For us, though the administration is new, Mr. governor should show more seriousness as regards the development of the Ijaw communities considering the economic value, huge support and votes our people gave to the him and the PDP, and this cannot be overemphasised.”

The council said the Ayakoromor Bridge, once completed, would provide a crucial link between various communities, enhancing connectivity within the riverine communities and facilitating the smooth movement of people, goods, and services.
