Centre for Crisis Communication Urges Military to Deploy Advanced Technology against Terrorism

The Center for Crisis Communication (CCC), has urged the Nigerian military and other security agencies to leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance intelligence gathering, security operations, and decision-making.
The centre said the capacity of AI to help analyze vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and predict security threats should be exploited to the maximum.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chairman Center for Crisis Communication (CCC), Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), said that technology and innovations at the disposal of the security forces should notably improve their operational efficiency, reduce the risk of civilian casualties, and help them stay ahead of emerging security threats.
The centre also charged the military to retool its communication strategy to ensure timely and effective dissemination of information to the public, arguing that lack of timely information flow to the public, creates room for counter-narrative of the war effort which diminishes the sacrifices of our gallant troops.
“We advise that an arrangement whereby the Nigerian security forces, particularly the Nigerian Armed Forces, revisits their communication strategy to ensure timely and effective dissemination of information to the public.
“It is advised that the principles of spontaneity quality in crisis communication be professionally employed in their public/media information management processes.
“The impression of an information overload which makes it difficult for the public to fully comprehend the security situation should be avoided as much as possible,” he said.
The Centre however recommend the following remedies, adopting of more responsive communication strategy that professionally provides regular updates on security operations as they unfold, depending on the circumstances or developments.
“It is believed that by doing so, the security forces can build trust with the public, reduce misinformation, and promote transparency,” he said.
General Olukolade urged the Nigerian security forces to continue to prioritize precision in their operations to minimize and avoid unintended collateral damage.
According to him, “Efforts should be made to enhance public trust in the military’s capacity to achieve operational precision.
“The security forces should continue to invest in advanced training, intelligence gathering, and equipment handling.
“The public needs to know that there are established protocols for identifying and engaging targets, as well as procedures for mitigating civilian casualties and there should be documented proofs that these are being strictly observed”.
Reiterating the urgent need to reinforce community collaboration and synergy amongst state forces, the centre also commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its renewed efforts in combating corruption, particularly in high-profile cases.
The center acknowledged the crucial role of EFCC in promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s public sector.
CCC urged the EFCC to enhance its media engagement strategies to effectively combat fake news and smear campaigns orchestrated by corrupt individuals attempting to undermine the agency’s resolve.
