Mindfully with Tunmise, recently organised a sensitisation programme as part of efforts aimed at addressing issues concerning men’s mental health,
It was themed: ‘A fight for Life’
Speaking recently at an event in Lagos, the Founder, Mindfully with Tunmise Podcast, Oluwatumise Kuku explained that it was necessary to equip men with the tools to relax and cope in life and also tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.
She emphasised fundamental techniques for stress management to prevent epidemic of silent suicide, adding that men need to be vulnerable, open up on their struggles and connect with others who may be going through similar experiences and seek help without fear of judgment.
“In regards to how women can help. I urge women to be more empathetic towards men and allow them to feel safe and understood when they are expressing vulnerability. Instead of judging them, women should embrace them and make them feel love and support.”
A Psychologist at Counseling Therapy and Rehabilitation Services, Dr. Olugbenga Coker emphasised the need for men to break free from the cultural norms that discourage them from expressing vulnerability and seeking help for their mental health.
According to Dr. Coker, ” the societal expectation that men should be strong and stoic has led to a culture of silence, where men struggle with mental health issues in secret. We need to admit that men are vulnerable and need support.”
He however, identified the inability to be vulnerable as a primary indicator of mental health struggles in men.
“When men are not ready to admit that they have a problem, that’s a red flag. Other signs include physiological issues, sleep disturbances, and irritability. There is the need for men to prioritise intimacy, self-care, and vulnerability. It helps foster togetherness, communal parenting, and intimacy,” he stressed.
