Mixed Reactions Trail Anyim’s Arrest by EFCC

By Benjamin Nworie

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced interrogation of former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, over alleged corruption and diversion of public funds.

A team of the anti-graft operatives quizzed the former Senate president in Abuja over the rehabilitation funds worth N780 million allegedly traced to a company in which he has an interest.

However, a chairmanship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State in the just concluded state congress, Silas Onu, has stated that the trial was a nemesis against Anyim.

Onu, who was the former caretaker publicity secretary of the state PDP, noted that God was fighting his battle over the ungodly things which Anyim committed during the last PDP congress in the state against him.

According to the PDP chieftain, “God is fighting my battle. Anyim has killed PDP in Ebonyi State even to the extent of cooking lies against me that Governor David Umahi was sponsoring my election. So, why has EFCC not remembered him all these while, but suddenly they appeared within a week that Anyim did something ungodly.”

Another chieftain of the PDP and former member of House of Representatives, Hon Linus Okorie, added that Anyim’s case was politically motivated.

Okorie alleged that though there was nothing to worry about the case, the former Secretary to the Federal Government (SGF) must have stepped on toes on the zoning of the chairmanship position of PDP to the North, “which must have angered his political associates, including Senator Bukola Saraki.”

Okorie said: “We believe that it was politically motivated. Anyim is today one of the leading lights of PDP in the South-east region, and one of the major contenders in the zone if PDP zones the presidential position to the Southeast, which is likely anyway.

“The invitation is political. Of course, you know that the case is fallout of Senator Stella Odua’s investigation. Who knows why she has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). It may still be a pressure on the side of Anyim, but it will come to past.”
