The wives of the governors of Anambra, Osun, Bayelsa, Taraba, Oyo and Enugu States yesterday made a collective call against gender violence in the country.

The wife of the governor of Anambra State, and the Founder of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, led other first ladies to rally support against gender violence during the 2021 mother’s summit held in Awka, Anambra State, recently.

Obiano, who spoke during the summit on the theme: ‘Fighting Gender Violence in COVID-19 World’, said the topic was chosen with a view to generate discussions to seek ways to end the gender violence as a social scourge.

She said: “We call for emphasis on grassroots sensitisation and awareness-creation on issues of gender-based violence.

“This will ensure that mothers at all levels are adequately informed. We must also pay attention to the behaviour of our children and also the men, to ensure they are engaged in meaningful ventures.

“It is everyone’s duty to ensure that the society is rid of the ugly trend of violence. My NGO, CAFE, is at the forefront of the campaign against any form of violence against women as well as the girl-child and boy-child.

“We have also used our NGO to empower women. Over 5,500 indigent women and youth beneficiaries have been empowered to help boost their economic self-reliance.”

In their goodwill messages, some of the first ladies who attended the summit included Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, Dr. Gloria Diri, Mrs. Anna Darius Ishaku, Mrs. Olufunke Makinde, and Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi of Osun, Bayelsa, Taraba, Oyo and Enugu States respectively, confirmed that the Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum is at the vanguard of fighting against gender-based violence.

The summit was also attended by the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Pauline Talen, who was represented by Director of Gender Affairs, Mrs. Friya Bulus.
