There was palpable fear on the streets of Maiduguri as gunshots echoed on Tuesday evening.
Many residents on the outskirts of the town were seen scampering into the town as they feared that their homes were under attack.
As people were trooping into the town from Jiddari Polo on the outskirts, the people already in the town were running from the streets into their homes.
The shooting which was on for about 30 minutes, from 6pm to about 6:30pm, made most of the streets to be deserted as residents feared that the town may have been infiltrated by insurgents.
Some of those fleeing from Jiddari Polo into the main town, told THISDAY that it was the gunshots they heard that made them flee into the town as they thought delay could be dangerous.
Sources within the military said the insurgents were engaged on the fringes of the town.
One of them, said they repelled the insurgents and that there was no cause for alarm, disclosing that the insurgents tried to penetrate the town.
There was no official military or security confirmation of the attack as at the time of filing this report as the spokesmen’s mobile lines were not going through.
