Sunday Ehigiator

In commemoration of the World Poetry Day (WPD) usually celebrated every March 21, retired professor of cell and molecular biology, Prof. Mark Nwagwu has presented three volumes of his poetry collection, ‘Write Me a Poem’ to the public at Irawo University Centre, Agbowo Ibadan.

Speaking at the event held on Friday, March 19, 2021, Nwagwu explained that, “Write Me a Poem is a three-volume poetry which curates my daily conversation with God.

“The collection spans a whole year, with volume one covering January to April, volume two, May to August, and volume three, September to December of 2020.”

Making his remarks, the chairman of the book presentation, Emeritus Prof. David Okali, noted that Nwagwu “seamlessly moved from writing poetry about the enchanting love he shared for his late wife, Professor Helen Nwagwu to his creator. This was evident in Write Me a Poem,” he said.

The occasion also had in attendance Prof. AOB Dasalu, Prof. Dan Izevbaye, the former Vice Chancellor of Augustine University, Ilara, Prof. Stephen Afolami, and the Publisher of the book, Nwachukwu Egbunike.

Other includes Nwagwu’s first PhD student, Prof.r Roseangela Nwuba, former Register of NECO, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, Prof. Olumide Ogundarasimi, Prof. Idowu Cadmus, Dr Demola Lewis, and Mr. Uzoma Nwagwu

Making his remarks, the book reviewer, Richard Anya, described Nwagwu’s collection as a good example of poetry written in the catholic tradition of mystical poetry.

“As such, the poems are painfully aware of good, evil, and the deep connection a penitent soul could have with the creator.”

Also speaking, Executive Editor of Feathers and Ink and Publisher of Write Me a Poem, Nwachukwu Egbunike stated that “the poet paints riveting images that depict his vulnerability as a human person, yet, equally conscious of his intimate relationship with the Divine.”

Foremost literary scholar, Prof. Izevbaye observed that poetry was not and cannot be limited to only those who have specialization in English-literature.

“Rather poetry is a gift which is entrusted to writers who have been possessed by the muse. Hence, one is not surprised that Nwagwu, a professor of cell and molecular biology, has prodigiously written many volumes of poems.”
