Queen of the Alté genre, Tems, talks inspiration and ambition in the PLAYRoom.
“There is a force pushing me and that is what I call grace and it is something that I am humble to experience” – Tems, March 2021 in the PLAYRoom

Singer, songwriter and producer, Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems was in the PLAYRoom to talk about her journey into the music industry. The queen of the Alté genre music scene, began making music at 20 years old with her first single “Mr. Agitator” regarded as receiving gigantic airplay. As a youngster, Tems adored Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child; she felt a fretfulness and a powerful urge to sing. Today, Tems has become one of the country’s shining stars with a voice that’s hard to resist.
Since her burst onto the scene, her singles such as “Looku Looku” and “Try Me” catapulted her to international fame and her popularity has remained unabated. The rise has earned Tems her own legion of fans, who call themselves the Rebel Gang, especially following her recent ordeal in Uganda. What sets her apart from her peers is her ability to approach music with a freedom to experiment different sounds.
Both Wizkid and Davido have featured Tems on their albums “Made in Lagos” and “A Better Time”, respectively. She was also recruited by American singer Khalid to join him and fellow Nigerian Davido on an Afrobeats remix of “Know Your Worth”. Her single “Mr Rebel” was nominated for the Headies award in 2019 and also in 2020 for “Omah Lay”.
Her “Broken Ears” EP, released back in September 2020, continue to solidify her signature arresting take on the Alté genre with the banger, “Damages”, that has taken the world by storm.

We were pleased to welcome Tems to the PLAYRoom where she spoke intimately with Kachi Offiah, popular ARISE 360 host, about growing up, her big break, her inspiration, her ordeal in Uganda and her goals. She also dropped some dope samples of her upcoming recordings.
