It was commendation galore yesterday in Benin City, Edo State capital as former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Jackson Gaius Obaseki, celebrated his 75 years of age.

The eulogies came when Dr. Obaseki accompanied by his wife, children, family members and friends held a thanksgiving mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Benin.
In a homily, the Archbishop of Benin Metropolitan See, His Grace, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, described Dr. Obaseki as a man of uncommon character, gentle and unasumming.

Archbishop Akubeze who spoke through the Parish Priest of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Benin, Reverend Fr. Pascal Emono, Rector, St..Paul Minor Seminary, Benin, said the celebrant had advanced the course in the nation’s oil industry without blemish.

According to him, “In a nation of corrupt and insensitive leaders like ours, Dr. Jackson Gaius Obaseki is one of the few who returned from retirement and is not accused of corruption and money laundry.
“He said birthday is an opportunity to thank God for one’s life, that is what Gaius Obaseki has done today.

“Therefore today, we have come to celebrate a man who has been a supporter of the downtrodden, the church, and those within his surrounding.
“He is a man you can rely on for counseling and advice, a man before God’s heart. He has been a gift to the church and may God continue to grant him long and healthy life”, Archbishop Akubeze stated.

Furthermore, the archbishop who is also the President of Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CBC), noted that the success story of the celebrant could not be completed without his wife, Mrs. Roxanna Gaius Obaseki, adding that she had remained the pillar behind the success story.
“Happy is the man who finds a true friend in his wife. So, there is nothing else for us to say than to thank God for Gaius Obaseki and his family”, he declared.

Also speaking from the sideline, former President, Customary Court of Appeals, Edo State, Justice Joseph Olubor (rtd), described the celebrants as a consistent, kind, selfless and unassuming personality who has remained a gift to Christianity and humanity because of his patriotism.

On his part, Osaro Eghobamien (SAN), pointed out that as a man who got to the pinnacle of his career, Gaius Obaseki made fundamental changes that Nigerians are still enjoying today in the oil industry.
Besides, a retired Permanent Secretary in Edo civil service, Prince Daniel Inneh, said the former GMD of NNPC left a good track record while in service that the younger generation will have a lot to draw from and make Nigeria a better country.

Responding, Dr. Jackson Gaius Obaseki said he is fullfiled and remade grateful to God for the new age. He was full of praises for his wife, for always being there for him at any given moment.
He also thanked the archbishop, priests and parishioners of St. Augustine Catholic Church for their inspirations.
