UN Condemns Killing of Unarmed #EndSARS Protesters in Nigeria

The United Nations has condemned the killing of unarmed protesters by the military in Lagos State on Tuesday night.

It, therefore, called on the security agencies forces to act at all times with maximum restraint, while also calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in a statement issued by the UN Spokesperson on Wednesday, said he was closely following recent developments across Nigeria, in the wake of reports that protesters “had been shot dead and wounded”, while also calling for an end to reported police brutality and abuses.

The UN chief whioe calling for an end to reported police brutality in Nigeria, also condemned violent clashes that claimed multiple lives and caused many injuries.

The statement read, “The violent escalation on 20 October in Lagos which resulted in multiple deaths and caused many injuries.”

“The Secretary-General  encourages the authorities to swiftly explore avenues to de-escalate the situation. He  reiterates the readiness of the United Nations to support national efforts towards finding a solution.”

Guterres called on Nigerian authorities “to investigate these incidents and hold the perpetrators accountable.”

He urged security forces “to act at all times with maximum restraint while calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.”

The UN chief therefore expressed his condolences to the families of the bereaved, and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
