As part of celebrations to mark former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s 83rd birthday recently, influential theatre production outfit, the Duke of Shomolu Productions staged its exciting play, ‘Aremu’ at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
The play, which was written and directed by Prof. Ahmed Yerima and was co-produced by Joseph Edgar and Ayo Aderinwale, also had as co-associate producers, Mofoluwake Edgar and Olisa Adibua. Iconic actor, Yemi Shodimu played the lead Aremu in the captivating play.
Over 1,000 people came out to share in the joy of the occasion and to witness the very first showing of the play any where in the world.
Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, members of his cabinet, top traditional rulers like the Oloto of Ota as well as other prominent Nigerians including Chief Mrs. Nike Akande and Prof Mabuogunje were in attendance.
The play, according to Edgar Joseph would immediately move to Lagos in May at the beginning of a nationwide tour that should see it move to Port Harcourt and Abuja before heading to the continent.
The play is a deep depiction of the life and times of one of the most celebrated Nigerians. The story takes off from his humble birth criss crossing the up and downs of one of the most colourful stories touching some very historic pathways in Nigeria’s journey to self determination.
