The Senate Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to constitute the board of the Federal Character Commission as the tenure of the members of the board had expired since 2018.
THISDAY had in its editorial on Tuesday drawn the attention of the President to the state of affairs in the federal character commission which currently has one commissioner following the expiration of the tenure of the other 36 commissioners. The editorial had noted that this was a breach of constitutional stipulation that each of the 36 states and the federal capital territory must have a representative on the board of the commission.
The federal character commission is the body saddled with the responsibility of implementing and enforcing the principle of fairness and equity in the distribution of public posts and socio-economic infrastructure in Nigeria
Coming under senate rules 42 and 52, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe during plenary on Tuesday said that the tenure of all members of the board had expired since April 2018, leaving behind only a member who had become a sole administrator and acting chairman
He said that the enabling law settibg up the commission had no provisions for a sole administrator or acting chairman.
Senator Abaribe also said that the constitution of the commission was a breach of the 1999 constitution, explaining that the Federal Character Commission is the only body constitutionally guaranteed to ensure equity and fairness in job placement in Nigeria.
