How To Ensure Your Internet Connections Are Secured

By Ebenezer Allen

Cyber attacks and threats to our internet spaces are becoming so prevalent. I hereby share my thoughts with you on how best to secure your internet connections.

Threats To Your Internet Connection.
Wired networks, despite being messy, are more difficult to hack. However, with wireless networks, or WiFis, external intrusion is easier for anyone.
Problems due to a cybercriminal on your network may include:
• Unauthorized and excessive consumption of your data
• Speed lags due to excessive use
• Increased bills due to excessive usage
• Tracking of your online activities
• In addition, the malefactors can also exploit your internet connection to access your device, and consequently, access your data. This puts your privacy and data security at risk.

How To Secure Your Internet Connection

For Wired Connections:

• Prevent physical access to your device
• Never share your password with others
• Keep an eye on which devices are connected to your network to spot any suspicious connection
• Disconnect unnecessary devices to reduce the load
• Keep your network up-to-date with the latest updates from the vendor

For Wireless Connections/ WiFi Networks:

• Change your network SSID name to something unique
• Change the WiFi’s default password and create a new stronger one
• Apply WPA2 encryption
• Turn off WPS (WiFi Protected Setup)
• Apply MAC address filtering to allow connections to specific devices only
• Track the devices connected to your network and avoid unnecessary connections
• Paint your house with anti-WiFi paint. This will limit the range of signals to you only, preventing neighbors from accessing your network.

The Pro Tip:
Use a VPN to encrypt your entire network. You can also download a VPN on your router to avoid the hassle of downloading VPN on individual devices.
Connect To External WiFi Securely
Stay careful when you connect to third-party networks or public WiFis. While you cannot secure those networks, you can certainly protect yourself.
AVOID using public WiFi as much as you can. Use the data plan offered by your cellular service provider instead. This may be costly but is still better than compromising your privacy.
Double check the validity of the network before connecting. You can ask the staff to be certain about the WiFi facility at the location.
Install a robust antimalware on your device to fight back any possible infection.
Use a VPN to stay veiled from the criminal hackers.
Never download any software while connected with public WiFi.
Only visit HTTPS secured websites to at least keep your data encrypted.
Turn-off WiFi the moment you don’t need it anymore.
