Gowon Eulogises Shagari

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has condoled with the family of late former President Shehu Shagari, describing him as good leader that dedicated his entire life to the service of the country.

Gowon condoled Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III and Governor Aminu Tambuwal, on the death which he described as great loss to the nation, Africa, and the world.

He called on Nigerians to imbibe the good habits of forgiveness, simplicity and integrity of late former President Shagari.

“I am in Sokoto physically to extend my condolence to Government and people of Sokoto over the demise of late Shagari.

He recalled that Shagari served as federal commissioner heading finance ministry against his wish because he preferred education during his regime, noting that the deceased was honest and transparent.

Responding on behalf of the family, the late president eldest son, Bala Shagari, appreciated Gowon on the visit.

Speaking at the Government House, Governor Tambuwal also lauded Gowon for his presence and described the visit as home coming noting that former head of state had sent condolence and called the families through phone.

Tambuwal said the great leaders have made enormous sacrifices in the struggle for the unity and the development of the country.

In his palace, Sultan Abubakar III, enjoined present leaders to emulate past leaders.
