Shaibu orders partial demolition of illegally sited motor park in city center

…inspects Industrial Court, Secretariat projects

Edo State Acting Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to issue a seven-day eviction notice to the management of Bob Izua Motors for the partial demolition of the park at Ring Road, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Shaibu, who gave the directive during an inspection of infrastructure projects in the city center, said the state government would not allow any illegal structure obstruct infrastructure development.

The park sits over an underground drainage system in Ring Road, hindering work on a project, which is expected to channel flood water out off the road. Failure to continue work on the project has resulted in flooding and traffic congestion on the axis, which is the commercial nerve center of Benin city.

The acting governor said partial demolition of the park would fast track work on the drainage which will help in reducing the incidence of flooding in Ring Road.

Meanwhile, the acting governor also inspected the ongoing construction of the two-room Industrial Court complex, assuring that on completion, it will ensure access to justice for the state’s residents.

Shaibu noted that the state government is delighted that lawyers in the state would no longer travel to neighbouring Ondo State for legal cases relating to industrial disputes, adding “Our lawyers from this axis will no longer be travelling to Akure. This will save them all the stress in attending to industrial court issues. The intention is to bring justice and the court closer to the people; it will save our lawyers from the hazards of travelling from Edo State to Akure, in Ondo State.”

“The court will commence sessions latest by May this year. Edo State is building an industrial base, hence we need an industrial court,” the acting governor added.

Shaibu also inspected ongoing construction work at the State’s Secretariat Complex where he expressed satisfaction with the level and quality of work.

He said the state government is determined to make the workplace more comfortable for all workers to engender efficiency in the discharge of duties, noting that a good environment in the workplace would boost workers morale and productivity.

He added that the renovation work at the Secretariat Complex “is in line with the vision of making the state an industrial hub.”

The contractor handling the Secretariat building project, Mr George Maroun, assured that the work on Block C will be delivered within the next 30 days.

Also inspecting ongoing construction work at the Uwelu Motor Park, Shaibu ordered Egor Local Government Council to provide an alternative ground for the dismantling of vehicles within 7 days.

He praised traders at Uwelu Market for giving the government the needed support, adding that construction work on a park in the axis and expansion of the road were already in progress.
