The Delta State Government has inaugurated a 17-man Task Force Committee on Anti-Human Trafficking and Illegal Migration to tackle the problem.
The committee’s Chairman and state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Peter Mrakpor, stated this during a press briefing.
Mrakpor said the task force would embarked on several sensitisation programmes to take the message to affected individuals.
He, therefore, called on stakeholders such as the media, churches, mosques, traditional rulers, and others to join hands in the campaign.
He noted that it was important to change the mindset of the youth largely involved in such practices.
He said “We need to tell the youth that they do not need to be trafficked or travel illegally to be successful. Traffickers use people to work on difficult conditions and pay little.”
The chairman said Delta State recorded increased cases in illegal activities, saying trafficking was a threat to the future of people.
“The increasing migration of the youth in our state is alarming. Over 250 of them have been arrested by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking and are currently in cell in Benin City, Edo State,” he added.
Saying though the rising cases of illegal trafficking was worrisome, the government wouldn’t spare anybody involved, including the sponsors of criminal activities.
