JUSTICE OBIORA MUST STAND FIRM

 Monday letter1

Never has a top judiciary officer, Walter Onnoghen being the exception, been pilloried in the public domain the way Justice Peter Obiora, who delivered the majority judgement at the Osun Election Petition Tribunal that concluded that Ademola Adeleke actually won the gubernatorial contest of September 22nd 2018, is being hammered left, right, and centre in a bid to put the Appeal Court justices, where Gboyega Oyetola has lodged appeal, under immense pressure. It was so bad that the immediate past governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, even went so far to use the very language Justice Obiora used to fault the re-run by INEC at Osun State against the judgement of Obiora, expression in the mould of “alien to the law.” Really, these are desperate times for the APC because the situation at Kano State regarding the gubernatorial re-run is the exact mirror-image of that of Osun State; actually, Justice Obiora’s argument has set a precedent for other judges to reference and, for those of us who had no legal education, that was good schooling on the pages of newspapers. The ruling party truly lost Osun and Kano States but it will throw scruples off to the wind in order to grab these states but the judiciary must form a bulwark against this political corruption. Osun State is the ancestral home of Bola Tinubu and Kano State is always considered the icing on Nigeria’s political cake.
