Windstorm: Edo govt assesses impact in Iguobazuwa, assures of relief materials

The Edo State Government has assured victims of a windstorm in Iguobazuwa, headquarters of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, of government’s support in ameliorating the impact of the incident, which caused severe damage in the area.

Special Adviser to Edo State Governor on Special Duties, Hon. Yakubu Gowon, gave the assurance when he led the government’s delegation to Iguobazuwa, for an impact assessment of the incident, which occurred on Sunday, March 24, 2019.

He said a report containing findings by the team will be forwarded to the governor after which the required relief materials would be dispatched to cushion the effect of the windstorm which reportedly damaged 21 buildings, including a public school.

He noted, “We thank God no life was lost to the natural disaster. Governor Godwin Obaseki asked us to come here for on-the-spot-assessment of the damage. Now that we have done our assessment, we will take record of the buildings affected and other valuables. We will provide relief materials to assist those affected by the windstorm.”

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Salami Lukman, urged residents of the area to take precautionary measures as the state government is now adopting disaster risk reduction approach to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.

Lukman said part of the state government’s plan is the introduction of emergency response lines to enable it to respond quickly to disasters.

Victims of the flood disaster expressed appreciation to the state government for responding to their plight.

A resident whose building was affected by the storm, identified as Mr Orobosa said, “as the delegation from the governor has visited us to take records, I am confident that materials would be sent to help us through these tough times.”
