Niger to Embark on Construction of Hostels in Tertiary Institutions

As part of its next level plans for educational institutions, the Niger State government will embark on massive construction of hostel accommodations in tertiary institutions across the state.

In the first phase of the programme, 750-bed hostels are to be constructed at N500 million.

The first institutions to benefit from the programme are the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai and the Justice Lami Fati Abubakar Institute of Legal Studies in Minna, the state capital.

A statement made available to newsmen in Minna on Monday by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Adamu, said: “The project is in fulfilment of Mr. Governor’s promise to the students of higher institutions during his statewide campaign that he will improve on the accommodation condition in institutions across Niger State.

“It is on record that the governor, during the mid term assessment tour, approved the construction of additional hostels at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.”

Adamu said under the programme, a 250-bed capacity two-storey building hostel each for both male and female students would be built in the university, while a similar block would be constructed at the Justice Fati Lami Abubakar Institute of Legal Studies.

According to the commissioner, the male and female hostels at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai would cost N447 million, while N124 million would be expended on the female hostel at Justice Fati Lami Abubakar Institute of Legal Studies.

The commissioner disclosed that government also had plans to construct similar hostel accommodation at the College of Agriculture, Mokwa and the State Polytechnic, Zungeru in addition to the building of a cafeteria at Justice Fati Lami Abubakar Institute for Legal and administrative studies Minna.

The statement did not say when the actual construction of the projects would commence.
