A non-governmental organ-sation, Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA), has demanded an inquest into the tragic collapse of four-storey building at Ita-Faaji area of Lago State.

In a letter addressed to the Registrar of the High Court of Lagos, the Chairperson of WELA, Mrs. Funmi Falana, demanded that a coroner’s inquest be conducted into the cause of the collapse that led to the death of 18 persons on March 13.

Falana also demanded that the inquest should make appropriate recommendations to the government.

She maintained that the demand for an inquest was in view of the high rate of occurrence of building collapse, especially in Lagos Island.

Falana argued that her demand was also in line with section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law, 2007, which provides that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his coroner district was a result of death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.

She requested that the inquest be conducted without delay and the report made public to forestall such ugly reoccurrence.
