Edo Govt defies heavy downpour, intensifies work on over 140 roads across state

Despite unanticipated heavy rainfall in the first quarter of the year, occasioned by changes in weather, the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has intensified work on the over 140 roads listed for construction.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said: “Road infrastructure is top priority to the state government as part of efforts to boost socio-economic activities across the state.”

Contractors handling the 107-kilometre Benin-Abraka Road with a spur to Aifuwa Street, were seen on site, last Friday, working.

On Erediauwa Street, linking Upper Sokponba and Sapele roads, construction work is progressing rapidly on three roads off Erediauwa, while the drainage system that will evacuate flood water from the area is being constructed.

An assessment of work on Mosheshe Street, also on Upper Sokponba Road, showed that earth work has been completed as contractors are set for stone base work and final asphalting.

One of the contractors who spoke with journalists, said they are not deterred by the unexpected heavy rains in the first few months of the year.

“We are on site and working hard to deliver on our mandate, which is to provide quality road infrastructure to Edo people and residents of the area,” the contractor added.

Work is also progressing rapidly on the 1.3kilometre Jemide-Ibizugbe-Osamwonyi road Project being executed by the state government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), at Uzebu, Ogiekae Community and Ekehuan Road in Benin metropolis.

In Edo Central Senatorial District, the Iruekpen-Ekpoma Road and several other roads are being constructed despite the heavy rainfall.

Patrick Ehimen Street, off First Ugbor Road; Adolor Street off Water Resources and Moses Obasuyi Street; Leaders’ College Road in Upper Ekehuan area and Ighodaro Drive, off Reuben Agho and Gapiona, in Government Reservation Area (GRA) are some of the roads being constructed by the state government.
