Adekuoroye Eyes Return to World Number 1 Spot

Nigerian female wrestling sensation, Odunayo Adekuoroye has expressed delight with her fourth place global ranking, but stressed she is capable of returning to number one in the world, which she held at a point in 2017.

After a title-winning outing at the German Grand Prix and equally great Bulgarian Open run, the two-time Commonwealth Games champion said she will work hard to climb higher in the women’s -57kg wrestling class.

Adekuoroye insists her performances last month in Germany and Bulgaria gave her fresh insights into her form, which she said she will now use to soar on the rankings by United World Wrestling (UWW).

She will, however, have to contend with the opposition posed by China’s Ningning Rong, who tops the women’s -57kg, as well as Bilyana Dudova of Bulgaria in second and Grace Bullen of Norway lying third.

The four times African champion went on to thank the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Honourable Daniel Igali, her coach, Purity Akuh, her training partners and General Overseer of Mountain of Fire & Miracles Ministry (MFM), Dr Daniel Olukoya for supporting her efforts.

Adekuoroye said: “I am glad that I have been ranked fourth in the world after my performances at the German Prix and Bulgarian Open.

“I learnt so many lessons from these two tournament. By the grace of God, hopefully before the end of 2019, I will get to the top.

“(I learnt) what I am good at and my weaknesses. The most important of all is that I also learnt from the mistakes of my opponents.

“In 2017, I was ranked number one in the world, after also performing excellently well in my outings.”
