Edo Poly Usen organises Int’l Conference on Waste Mgt, to proffer solutions to recycling, others

The Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, has concluded plans to organise an International Conference on Waste Control and Management to curate contemporary issues in environmental studies and proffer policy changes for sustainable development.

The conference billed to hold from March 13 and 14, will play host to top academicians, researchers, policy experts, and development scholars drawn from within and outside the country. It will be held at the school’s complex in Usen, near Benin City, Edo State.

Director of Academic Planning, Edo State Polytechnic, Dr. Kess Asikhia, said that modalities for hosting of the conference are already in place and scholars on environmental management and allied disciplines are encouraged to attend and contribute to the discourse on waste control and management.

According to him, “We are excited to be hosting this conference. A lot has gone into planning the conference. We held one in 2011, but this time around, the conference is going to be one of the best. We have already confirmed the participation of some scholars from the United Kingdom (UK).

The book of abstracts is in the works. We hope to proffer solutions to recycling, strategies for environmental management and sustainability, among others.”

On the theme of the conference, he said that waste control and management is a key part of society today because of the need to control waste in the environment as well as concerns over climate change.

He said, “We chose this theme to enable scholars, who can be drawn from any discipline because of the vastness of the impact of waste in society, to engage in productive discourse. We will also use the opportunity to showcase researches we have been conducting and also allow others to show us what they have been working on. The scope of the work cuts across plastic and iron wastes as well as waste management policy. We expect that experts will add to the body of knowledge and also make recommendations for policy changes.”

Noting that the conference is in consonance with the new direction of the polytechnic, he added that such conferences will hold every six months in the institution, to strengthen the scholarly output from the academics.
